Collaboration will be fundamental for the gas industry to adapt as a valuable resource, and Xoserve intends to play a critical role.

That’s the message from Steve Brittan, Xoserve’s CEO, as the company celebrates its twentieth anniversary at the centre of Britain’s gas market this month.

Reflecting on Xoserve’s role as the Central Data Service Provider (CDSP) for the gas industry and the long-term future of the sector, Steve highlights the necessity for the gas sector and Xoserve to adapt in preparation for future market changes.

"Xoserve has for many years remained in the background, focused on delivering its core duties to the industry. Going forward, we want to share our team’s expertise and our unique data insight to best prepare the energy sector and its customers for future changes."

Having witnessed the gas sector’s continuous evolution, the UK’s commitment to net zero is another significant yet necessary change to the industry. Xoserve believes gas will continue to play a vital part in delivering net zero for the UK, along with renewables, while ensuring future energy resilience and security.

"Collaboration will be fundamental for the gas industry to effectively adapt as a valuable resource in the future energy mix. No single entity has all the answers, and no single energy source can support a whole energy system, so we need to work together", Steve concluded.

Xoserve will continue to provide data on the gas market to support Ofgem, NESO and DESNZ in navigating this complex transition effectively. It will also support industry discussions and provide practical solutions to deliver a positive impact for customers.

As Xoserve looks to the next twenty years, the company will continue to develop its future operations and expertise to ensure it can best support its customers and the wider industry in navigating potential changes, including:

  • Accommodating a future scenario that includes blends of natural gas with other gases of varying calorific values - a challenge Xoserve is actively addressing through collaborative billing and settlement projects with gas networks.
  • Preparing and future-proofing its systems and teams for whatever decision is made regarding the future of gas and how Xoserve will continue to fulfil its role as CDSP.

While the precise long-term plan for gas is still under consideration, Xoserve is preparing for the future of gas within Britain. Xoserve’s confidence in this future is rooted in its recognition of the value of its people and teams.
